A Cookie-Cutter Approach to Giving Back?

Employee-Owned Flour Company and Grassroots Organization Partner to Promote the Power of Cookies

October 24, 2007

October 10, 2007 – Norwich, Vt. Baking and decorating cookies, having fun with friends and family, giving back to the community, helping people in need: those are the inspired  goals behind a new partnership and baking toolkit from King Arthur Flour Company and Drop In & DecorateSM: Cookies for Donation, a deliciously simple concept developed by a King Arthur Flour customer.

The Drop In & Decorate Kit includes all the basic supplies a home baker needs to host friends and family for a feel-good party of cookie baking and decorating: mixes for rollout vanilla sugar cookies and icing; three cookie cutters; food coloring and icing sugars; disposable pastry bags with reusable tips for decorating; and instructions for organizing a cookie-decorating event and identifying, contacting and donating to community agencies. The kit will be available for $25 throughout this holiday season through The Baker’s Catalogue at King Arthur Flour and online at http://www.kingarthurflour.com

“We believe in the power of baking to strengthen communities,” said P.J. Hamel, editor of The Baker’s Catalogue at King Arthur Flour. “More and more people are looking for ways to give back to their community and to do things with their families, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and worship groups that are not about spending money. Drop In & Decorate uses baking to connect individuals with each other and with their communities.”

King Arthur Flour developed the kit in conjunction with long-time customer and Rhode Island food writer Lydia Walshin, owner of Ninecooks, which creates and hosts group cooking events, including classes and the Drop In & Decorate program. Walshin contacted the flour manufacturer in hopes of forming a partnership.

“Drop In & Decorate started in my kitchen in 2002 with a couple of friends, a few dozen cookies, and a belief that beautifully decorated cookies could bring joy to neighbors in less than joyful circumstances,” Walshin said. “Over the years, Drop In & Decorate has become a fun and meaningful holiday tradition for the many families who come to my kitchen to decorate every year. I hope through my partnership with King Arthur Flour that our kit will help other families and friends start their own Drop In & Decorate tradition.”

More information on the Drop In & Decorate program, including a how-to guide for hosting a cookie decorating event and making donations, is available at http://www.ninecooks.com/dropin.html
